If you are a resident of San Diego you have probably heard about the leopard sharks off of the coast, near La Jolla Shores. This annual gathering of the sharks makes for an amazing outdoors activity. The warmer waters provide an environment that allows the sharks to mate and hatch their young, which usually take up to six months. The leopard sharks are harmless, which makes snorkeling alongside them one of the most incredible experiences.
The best time to go snorkeling with the leopard sharks is early June to the end of October, which is when they usually swim in their largest pods, sometimes reaching up to 1000 in number. They are still able to be seen through the end of the year, but those sightings are more rare and only range from 100-200 sharks.
On some days you can simply swim out from the shore and see them around your feet. To get a better view of them you will need to rent or buy snorkeling equipment. If you aren’t comfortable enough in the ocean to go out on your own, there are a number of private tours available. For more information please visit LaJolla.com
