Point Loma, Calif. (September 2018) – Willis Allen Real Estate’s Carter Shuffler recently helped organize a Veteran’s Fishing Day to thank veterans for their service.
The event was hosted by the Point Loma Rotary Club and Veteran’s Village of San Diego.
The event included a free day of fishing therapy for 40 veterans on San Diego’s premier sports fishing boat the Daily Double. The boat left Point Loma Sportfishing Dock at 9 a.m. and returned at 5 p.m. after a day of fishing on the ocean. The vets are living at the Veterans Village of San Diego rehabilitation center.
“These are well-deserving men and women who have earned a little R&R,” says Shuffler who collaborated with Allen Brown, a fellow Rotary Club member, to organize the trip. “Some of these vets are homeless or going through re-entry, and they needed a little bit of downtime that this event offered.”
The day was incredibly festive with the Sweethearts of Swing singing trio providing the backdrop. The group sang standards that traditionally accompanied military service and wore authentic costumes of World War II Waves. Meanwhile, volunteers distributed coffee, donuts and ball caps as the participants boarded the Daily Double fishing vessel. Onboard, meals, snacks and drinks were provided by Rotary Club members. Rotary Club members also supplied rental rods, tackle and bait, while the California Department of Fish and Wildlife waived fishing licenses for the day.
“It was a remarkable day on the water, and I know the vets enjoyed themselves as much as we did,” says Shuffler. “We hope to make this an annual event.”
