twenty20_718f06ac-82a3-43db-9e4d-3987b630e4b3In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, we have combed the area looking for the best taco joints (no small task since tacos are omnipresent in San Diego!). Here are our top picks for some of the most notable, can’t-miss places for taco tastiness. Buen provecho!

City Tacos
3028 University Ave. (at 30th St.), San Diego

City Tacos offers upscale, modern interpretations of tacos in North Park. The popular Borrego Taco includes pulled lamb with wild mushrooms, cotija cheese, tomato, cilantro, and fried leeks in a chipotle cream sauce on a house-made corn tortilla.

Highlights: late hours, outdoor seating, vegetarian-friendly, Taco Tuesdays

Luche Libre
1810 W. Washington St., San Diego

Notable for its Mexican wrestling theme (you can watch old wrestling matches on TV, reserve the “champs” booth/table, and buy paraphernalia) as well as its food, this popular taco joint in Mission Hills, North Park, and Carlsbad serves up hefty tacos and other street-style dishes. We recommend the queso taco.

Highlights: late night weekend hours, kid’s meals, vegetarian options; catering

Oscar’s Mexican Seafood
703 Turquoise St., San Diego; 746 Emerald St., San Diego; 646 University Ave., San Diego; 927 J Street, San Diego; 115 N El Camino Real, Encinitas

This hole-in-the-wall, north PB gem actually has several locations, including Hillcrest, East Village, and Encinitas – and some of the best fish tacos in SD. Taco buyer beware: it’s cash only.

Highlights: ceviche and homemade sauces, proximity to beach (north PB location)

789 W. Harbor Dr., San Diego; 1026 Wall St., La Jolla

Both downtown and La Jolla locations offer an innovative menu of tacos – one section of a large menu – in a bright, artistic setting. Tacos are built on a base of crispy, melted cheese and tortilla. Enough said.

Highlights: locally sourced food, happy hour, Taco Tuesday, kid’s menu, gluten-free and vegetarian options, cocktail/tequila menu, large group seating

2196 Logan Ave, San Diego

Visit this cool Mexican eatery in historic Barrio Logan for street food and award-winning tacos that run the gamut – egg, meat, fish ,veggie, you name it.

Highlights: craft beers and cocktails, breakfast tacos until noon, daily specials, weekday happy hour, catering

Tacos El Gordo
3265 Palm Ave., San Diego; 689 H Street, Chula Vista; 556 Broadway, Chula Vista

This authentic Tijuana counter-serve taquería is no stranger to the A-list for its street-style tacos. In the taco business for over 40 years, it opened its first location in San Diego in 1998, followed by two others in Chula Vista and three in Las Vegas. If two tacos went on a date, it would look like mulas – try it!

Highlights: super late hours, fresh from-scratch ingredients, Mexican fountain drinks

The Taco Stand
621 Pearl St., La Jolla; 3000 Upas St. Suite 105, San Diego; 645 B St., San Diego; 642 S Coast Hwy 101, Encinitas

The Taco Stand serves familiar Mexican dishes, including handmade Tijuana-style tacos at spots in La Jolla, North Park, downtown, and Encinitas. The original La Jolla store resembles a Mexican-style taco stand. Try the classic al pastor and carne asada fries!

Highlights: vegan and vegetarian options, Rosarito-style churros; catering
