Moving to a new home can be an exciting – yet stressful – time for your entire family, including your pets. Here are some tips for making the experience as easy on Fido and Fluffy as possible.
Before you move, have one last appointment with your local vet to take care of any necessary vaccines and prescription refills. Stock up on food and your pet’s favorite snacks so you will be set as you travel to, and when you arrive at, your new home.
Prior to moving day, ensure your pet’s collar is well-fitting, and that it includes a tag with up-to-date contact information.
As you’re packing a suitcase for your human family members, make space for some stuff for your pets, as well. Include a few favorite toys, a bed, treats, leash, food/water bowls, and poo bags in an easy-to-access spot in the car on moving day.
If your move requires a road trip, map out places you can let your pet stretch her legs along the way at public parks or dog parks. You should also look for pet-friendly restaurants so you can give your pet a break from the car during stops for meals. Search for pet friendly hotels along your route, and make reservations ahead of time so you’re not left in a lurch.
On moving day, find some place safe your pet can go – like doggie daycare or a friend’s house. If that’s not an option, secure your pet in a crate, gated area or closed room in your house. The hustle and bustle of moving day can frighten your pet, so it’s important to keep them secure to reduce stress and prevent an accidental escape.
Once you arrive at your new home, take your dog on a walk around the neighborhood so he can sniff out the new scene. This will help him feel more comfortable at at-ease.
