15+ Holiday Volunteering Ideas in San Diego County

holiday volunteering in san diego, caThere’s no better way to celebrate the holiday season than by giving back. In fact, it’s something many in our community – including our own Willis Allen Realtors – do year-round. Here are some San Diego area organizations that could use your time and resources this holiday season.

WASTE NOT! Food Sorting (Wednesdays)
Help Kitchens for Good process and sort their weekly donation from Specialty Produce’s food rescue program.

City Heights Food Distribution (Thursdays)
Help distribute food to primarily low-income seniors and families in the City Heights area. Volunteers will be setting up, cleaning up, and helping with the food distribution.

Third Avenue Charitable Organization (TACO) (November-December)
Volunteers help prepare and serve meals twice a week, year-round, including Thanksgiving week. TACO is also seeking assistance during the Christmas season to prepare food baskets and personal hygiene kits for the homeless.

Adopt-a-Day of Bell Ringing (November-December)
Help The Salvation Army “Do the Most Good” by Adopting-a-Day Bell Ringing this holiday season. There are multiple days and locations available.

Toys for Tots (November-December)
Toys for Tots needs help collecting, sorting, and distributing toys for the 2017 San Diego U.S. Marine Reserve Toys for Tots Campaign.

Angel Tree (November-December)
The Salvation Army Angel Tree program is a holiday program designed to raise in-kind gifts to assist families who are in crisis and who otherwise wouldn’t have the resources to celebrate.

San Diego Rescue Mission (Nov. 18 and Dec. 16)
Volunteers are needed for the Thanksgiving and Christmas Outreach to walk the streets and invite the homeless to the Rescue Mission’s holiday meal.

Father Joe’s Villages Thanksgiving Day 5K Run/Walk (Nov. 23)
Help with registration, water stations, cheering on runners and more.

San Diego Run for the Hungry (Nov. 23)
Two hundred volunteers are needed at the 16th annual San Diego Run for the Hungry, hosted by the San Diego Food Bank on Thanksgiving morning. Help with registration, water stations, course marshaling, start/finish line crowd control, and clean-up.

S.O.S Toy Drives (December)
Interested in hosting a Spirit of Sharing (S.O.S.) toy drive to support local military families in need? This organization provides you with a collection box and some great tips, or if you are an individual who would like to donate toys in person, drop them off at the S.O.S office.

Santa’s Elves with Sharing the Joy (December TBA)
Help provide financial relief to junior enlisted and recently discharged families during the holiday season. STEP is looking for individuals, companies, religious establishments, other non-profit organizations to help provide volunteers to help distribute gifts at their office this holiday season.

Meals on Wheels Annual Holiday Concert (Dec. 3)
This North County concert features the renowned Coastal Community Concert Band and is open to the public each year. If you are interested in lending a hand, Meals on Wheels would love to add you to its volunteer team.

Holiday Baskets (Dec. 15-17)
Community Resource Center’s Holiday Baskets is San Diego’s largest distribution program, providing a dignified and free “shopping experience” for families and individuals in need. Families receive food boxes that provide a turkey or chicken and all the trimmings for a holiday meal and staples for the week.

Holiday Brunch with Santa (Dec. 16)
Join the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department’s Therapeutic Recreation Services for a day of fun and service at the annual Holiday Brunch with Santa, Holiday Extravaganza Carnival, and Holiday Dance. Various shifts are available throughout the day for event set-up crew, grounds crew, greeters, craft fair booth workers, arts and crafts assistants, games booth assistants, break-down crew and pretty much everything in between.

Holiday Magic for Kids (Dec. 16)
Last year over 2,500 low-income and homeless families received boxes of food. This year, volunteers are needed to wrap toys, stuff stockings, distribute food, check-in children, set-up/clean-up, hand out toys, and more.
